I considered it years ago for a fuge but after doing a bit of research I found that people really didn't think it did anything for their tanks. I have read that it's good if you are growing macro algae in the display. I gave it a pass.

what are your expectations of the sump? for the tank you've got, I wouldnt think you need high nitrate export demands.

I've been reading that rock rubble and live rock with some marco algae is all you need. MM is considered snake oil here on RC. Also, to have a DSB in the sump you need to produce a LOT of flow over the DSB which can be hard in a small sump...

I tried talking a friend of mine out of the miracle mud route, he didnt listen lol. After a year and a half he goit rid of it and just has rock rubble and chaeto in his sump now. IMHO its a waste of money and worse your valuable time with the maintenance it requires.

Miracle mud is basically a form of live sand, with beneficial organisms in it. It's questionable as to how beneficial, and you'll find about as many who swear by it as who swear at it. A DSB doesn't start with any beneficial organisms, but develops them over a period of time. You'll also find those who swear by/at a DSB.
Read the sticky on DSB's at the top of this forum for more info on them. Jeff |
