Quieting drain line to sump
HI Everyone,
I just finished my plumbing on a new 100G tank and did the leak test and everything looked good. The tank is currently running and waiting for the salt to be fully absorbed. On the overflow I added a durso standpipe to lower the noise on the overflow to the drain bulkhead, but i'm noticing a gurgle sound fromt he drain bulkhead down to the sump. The drain pipe is just below the water line and is flowing into a filter sock. The tank is in the living room and the stand is an open concept with no doors. I was searching for some ideas and found a few and wanted to run them past everyone and see what you think. 1. I was going to add a gate valve to replace the end cap with the holes on the top of the durso. I assume this will work the same way as the end cap with holes drilled in it but it'll be adjustable. Yay or nay? 2. For the drain pipe, from the bulkhead down to the sump, I was going to add another gate valve to slow/regulate the flow so the noise can be minimized. My drain pipe goes straight down, then a 90 degree turn toward the sump and then another 90 degree turn down into the sump. Where/what area would be best to add the gate valve? When I add the drain pipe gate valve, does the durso gate valve need to be adjusted? Does it matter where i add the gate valve for the drain line? The best solution for me would be the 90 turn down into the sump since it's at the end of the pipe and i don't need to drain the overflow and work on it that way. Sorry no pics, i'm at work at...which is a slow day today. |

The valve on the drain should take care of the problem. Add it wherever it is easy and out of the way (but near the bottom to prevent waterfall noise). It should be a one time set and forget it, no regular adjustments are needed.

i would never restrict overflow but rather valve the return down as this will even help your sump work better to serve your tank as you will have longer dwell time within the sump . longer dwell = cleaner water ,isn't that the purpose of the sump /skimmer /fuge ?

We need size of bulkhead, size of piping, schedule piping, and how much flow you have going into the tank from your return.
