Green hair algea help.
What may be causing this and how can I get rid of it? Or is this beneficial to fish and inverts or future fish(i plan on getting a yellow tang soon). I began noticing the hair like algea(2nd pic) growing every where after buying this live rock.
then came this |

Check your nitrates and phosphate. You may read 0 but they are there and feeding the ha. Something is high or phosphate is leaching out of your rock. Water changes and a GFO reactor would help.

weekly water changes will help maybe even a phosban reactor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO8Ih...eature=related you might also think about how long you've been running your light bulbs it's good to change every year...................

There are many causes for GHA, over feeding, old lights, excess nutrients etc. Read through this article;

I've been waging my own war for quite a while now. GFO, extra turbo snails and pull the long stuff by hand often. Watch the feedings and do your water changes. Skimming I hope?
Good luck. |

it starts like that, then before you know it, your whole tank will be covered with GHA.

Actually, I had the red slime before and got rid of it but now I have this problem and my sand still gets brown as well. My lighting consists of 1 actinic and 1 6700k and I have a skimmer that I would say does not work or is not efficient, since it only produces stuff after 2 weeks. When I had the slime I stopped feeding and decreased the lights. I was feeding two time a day but now feed once every other day. My lights are now on 12 hours a day, and I have never stopped doing my weekly 20% water changes.
By the way the tank has been set up for about 5 months. |

What kind of water do you use? My 55 had ha like crazy and I was misinformed and used tap. My 120 started with ro/di and running the GFO has killed off some of the ha on the rock from the 55.

I'd say cut your 6700k down to 8 hours, get a couple turbos and some hermit crabs and it will all disappear. Assuming your using RO water. Tap water gives you retarded amounts of hair algae. I had the same issue when I started my tank because i figured whats the point of having a tank thats off whenever i wanted to look at it. So with my schedule my lights come on at 4pm and shut off at midnight

Mine are 4 - 10. But if he is leaching nothing will take care of it till the base problem is solved. I has snailsw, emeralds, hermits, and a sea hare that couldn't mow it all down. Find the source and solve your problem.

The first picture looks like it might be bryopsis(although not very sure), which can be harder to eliminate then the regular GHA in your second pic. Do a search for bryopsis and magnesium treatment. Many reefers have found that increasing your mag levels will starve the bryopsis. Keep in mind all treatments can have side effects, find one that works best for you.
