Heater question
Hi all... New to RC, but have been reading for months.
I'm starting a new 90gal reef tank... Just wanted to ask about heaters. Does my 90 need a heater? Or can I put it in the fudge/sump? |

Sump is fine. One of the benefits of having a sump.

Welcome to RC...wealth of information on the boards. Put the heater in the sump. If you haven't made your purchase I'd like to recommend that you pick up a Ranco controller to run your heater(s). All heaters eventually fail and you don't want one sticking on and killing everything in your tank. Set the heater to the temp that you want to maintain, then set your controller so that it kicks off just slightly above that point. Should your heater ever fail to kick off the controller will turn it off to prevent overheating. Inexpensive peace of mind.

I suppose that you could do that but since the heater is much more likely to fail than the Ranco I'd let the controller be the failover.
