Is it normal for the hole in the return pipe,( in the overflow box) to be above the water? It's very loud, the sound of the jet of water hitting the inside of the overflow box.

OK, how about this. How do I raise my D.T. waterlevel so that it is above the hole in the return pipe? If I close the valve a little on the drain that is bad right?

YOu dont want to restrict the drain because you will risk a flood. I am not sure what is going on with your return what hole do you have in the return pipe?

that hole is important, because it break the siphon in the return line in case you have an electrical outage. Therefore it will always and need to be above water level to do what it supposes to do. Make sure you clean this hole often as well. Maybe there's a way you can dampen the noise, but do not try to submerge it underwater.

generally that hole is right below the water line such that it isnt spraying water in such a way that it makes any noise. I doubt you'd be able to raise the water level in the display significantly (assuming it's a reef-ready tank), but you may be able to change out the plumbing somewhat to get the siphon break hole under the water level.

ok thanks, yeah it's the little hole to break the return line's siphon if pump stops. it is a RR tank. just wondering why the level in the tank doesn't stay above it.

OK, if anybody looks at this thread because they have the same problem I have just solved it. In a reef ready tank pull the 90 degree elbow off of the return pipe in the overflow box. You can keep the lockline and spraybar on it. Get some epoxy aquarium safe putty, like the AquaStik epoxy, and plug up the hole. You can put it right back on and turn on your pump immediately, because it cures underwater, that is why I used it instead of silicone. Now set your return's spraybar as close to the water's surface as you can and unplug your return pump for a power loss test. Can your sump handle the amount of water that comes out of the return line before the spraybar draws air and breaks the siphon? If it can and your spraybar is too loud that close to the surface, move it down and do another test. Hope this helps

or you could plug that hole and drill another one a little lower. The trick is to have it high enough that it will stop the siphon before it floods your tank, but low enough that its right below the normal water line.

Just make it so the hole is pointed down rather than up. I assume the hole is drilled into the threaded male end of the locline? If so, that is an easy fix. No need to plug and holes at all.
