Yellow Tang not so Yellow, is it sick?
I have a Yellow Tang, which I got from the LFS about a week ago. We wanted to add some yellow color to the aquarium and bought one that was bright yellow and about 1.5 inches long. I went away for 2 days and couldn't get the new digital timer working right before I left (crappy GE directions) so I left the light off. I came back tonight (Sun) and the yellow tang looks clear, almost see through with the 10,000K lights and about the same with the actinic blue 03 lights. Is this normal for Yellow Tangs? Is he/she going through a phase? Thanks in advance.

Hard to tell without a picture, but it could be stress induced. When you say that you could almost see through it, do you mean the fins, or the fish's body -- if the body that is a big cause for concern.

Every morning when the lights turn on just about all of my fish are pale in color. Just keep an eye on him and don't sweat it too much. He'll probably color up once the lights are on a while

My yellow tang looked like this alot, as well as some PJ cardinals I had with it. Its color should return after having the lights on for a bit. |

Tangs tend to be very white as a result of stress. I know when my powder blue shipped it was as white as paper, but has colored up since. It is a little unusual that it would be stressing this far into the game (and not sooner) unless it is being harassed by a tank-mate.

Just make sure you keep feeding. Nori works best for tangs. As long as its eating you should be good.

Also check your nitrates. I had extremely high nitrates and a very pale tang. As I lowered them she brightened up.

Hi chuckdallas,
I myself have a yellow tang which had some fin torn and not as bright yellow as I wanted. I changed his food to cube brine shrimp and krill. After about 2 to 3 weeks his fin was all healed and his color was very bright almost like florescent. This combination really help for me. Water Readings: Ammonia - 0 ppm Nitrates - 10 ppm Nitrites - 0 ppm Phosphates - 0 PH - 8.3 Temp - 79.5 Calcium - 475 ppm Salinity - 1.24 KH - 10 Magnesium - 1275 ppm Silica - 1 ppm Strontium - 11ppm Iodine - 0.8 ppm Give it a try.
