EHEIM 1262 intake sponge filter, should I keep it on?

My eheim return pump comes with a blue sponge filter on the intake side:

Should I keep this on or is it better to take it out?

No need

Hi

I used to ran the same pump as a return for my old 50 Gs tank. I tried with and without the sponge. the sponge helps to prevent large particles returning to your main tank, however, you will have to clean it often as it will clog fast and reduce the flow. I also like to feed the tank from the return pump especially frozen foods. in short, you don't need it.

Best

Ethan

If you do keep it, be sure to clean it every few days, as nitrates can accumulate due to a gunky sponge.

Took mine out as soon as I opened the box. Theres no way I was going to be pulling that apart every couple days.
