When will my ammonia and nitrites go down?
After my tank starts cycling when will my ammonia and nitrites start going down? I have a 50 gallon tank, 20 gallon sump. Also, what level should my nitrates be at?

Ammonia starts going down after about a week, when the NitrItes surge. The NitrItes start going down after about 2 to 3 weeks, when the NitrAtes surge. Nitrates should be as low as possible, read this:

They will go down when they are good and ready
You want your nitrates as low as possible. After the cycle get some macro algae in your sump.
