Thick Red Algae ID/Help?
About a year and half ago, I got a monti cap frag on a rock that had a red hair/turf like algae on it. I was just starting out in the hobby with my first reef, and put it in my display without thinking too much about it. Since then, it has spread all over my tank onto every rock surface. Here are some pics:
I have emerald crabs, a kole tang, a foxface lo, and lawnmore blenny - none of which have made a dent in it. Can anyone help me ID what this algae actually is, and if there is anyway of fighting it? It's not very visually appealing, and worst of all I can't in good conscience frag any of my corals and risk infecting someone else's tank. |

Looks like red turf algae to me, some have had luck with black long spine urchins or trochus snails but they may only keep it somewhat at bay. You may be able to get rid of this by using AlgaeFix Marine, there is a very long thread on here about using it to control problem algae and it seems to work. Another option is to remove the rock and nuke it. HTH

I just ordered a bunch of mexican turbos and a black longspine urchin, hopefully that will have some impact. I searched through the AlgaeFix thread, and the few times that red turf is mentioned they say it didn't help. But if the new critters don't make a dent in it, I'll give it a shot anyway. |
