I found these in my sump sock alive...ID?

Can someone tell me what these are and should I put them back in my tank or flush them? I switched my sump socks out today and these were crawling around in the dirty one. Thanks for any help you can give!

Wow, those amphipods are huge compared to the ones in my tank! Throw them back into the tank... free food for the fish!

KeMo - I will keep an eye out for that because I do have quite a few zoas in my tank...I saw one of the little buggers crawling around one of the colonies a little bit ago after lights out, but he didnt seem to be eating. Extreme vulgarity removed. DO NOT DO THAT AGAIN

FWIW - just killing the ones in your filter sock, even if they are bad (which I doubt - I have about a gazillion of them in my softy tank) will not even begin to dent the actual population. A flasher wrasse of one sort or another will certainly keep them in check. My orange back fairy wrasse picks at them all day, and is the fattest, happiest fish I have ever seen.

Aeolid nudibranchs eat zoas. What you saw is likely the amphipod grazing on detritus or algae between the zoa polyps. The predatory type of amphipod is brightly colored and very rare in home aquaria. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-09/rs/index.php

Nope. The colony I had started to get eaten in around a week. It took about 1 week for them to eat about 6-8 heads of my small colony. They started after the new growth then whet after the bigger ones. I know this because I moved the colony up on my frag rack @ the top of tank. Within a few days there was new growth. So I placed a rock beside it so it would grow onto that rock. After if grew about 5 new heads on the new rock I placed the new rock down in the tank. Within 3 days it was pretty much gone. The problem in controlling these is they only come out at night. You will see none in the day. I have a mandarin in the tank and he sleeps @ night so that did not work 4 me.
Oh and I believe I said they looked like that not thats them as its really hard to id them. The ones I have are not a bright orange. So I dont no what to say but I have the evidence to prove it in my eyes with that frag rack test.

I always turn my socks inside out when I take them out for cleaning purposes. I try and collect any pods and drop them in my return pump intake. They never hit the bottom before a fish snags them. Very entertaining.

OK...here's the deal. You need quite a few more but skewered and grilled with lemon and butter they're really quite tasty. Your fish will love you forever!

Seriously, these pods pictured will not hurt your Zoas. Don't let anyone tell you different! The presence of large amphipods and smaller copepods in your system is always a good indicator.

Cool thank you! I was looking with a flashlight in my tank after lights out and could see all kinds of little pods crawling around on my rocks...must be a good sign as some of you have said =)
