Finicky Euroreef skimmer

My Euroreef protein skimmer is being finicky and I am starting to wonder if perhaps it is the real cause of my algae problem. When I clean it out it acts fine for about a day...it gets good bubbles going and I get some good skimate in the cup. Then I get about an 1/4" in the cup...the neck of the skimmer gets pretty well coated...and it stops collecting.....bubbles don't continue all the way up the neck...and I think the skimmer efficiency goes downhill. Whats up? It doesn't seem to be an issue of water height in the skimmer....but once the neck gets coated the bubbles don't seem to work their way all the way up and into the cup.

What size skimmer and what size tank? Sounds like the skimmer is over sized.

whenever the neck of any skimmer gets too coated the performance will go down signifigantly

If you have lots of algae problems as stated, your water just might be kinda dirty and scumming the neck up quickly. It doesnt take a deep clean to get it working....get a roll of paper towels...leave it by the skimmer and when it gets gummy give the neck a quick wipedown.

Turn yourself into the self cleaning neck you cant afford

fwiw, I do this to all of my skimmers every 2-3 days, and if I didnt, they wouldnt work as well as I need them to
