I named two fish back in the days. One I called Puff Daddy and the other was Puty-Tang. I'm sure you can guess what fish I had. LOL

They seem to have more personality when you name them.

Yellow Tang: Jetson
Blue Hippo: Sunny
2 Blue Chromis: Milo & Otis
2 Cleaner Shrimp: Comet & Ajax
2 Bangaii: Originally named Hans & Frans. Until they had babies.
2 Mocha clowns: I refuse to name either Nemo.
Royal Gramma: Pixel
And finally Calvin the Clam.

My girlfriend names all our fish. Some names are more original than others, but I agree that it gives the fish individual identity and personality. Let's see there are:

copper the copper band butterfly
tangy the pacific blue tang
grandpa the algae blenny

etc...

I think that grandpa is our favorite. He just looks grumpy and ornery!

Oh, then there are the corals. Most are nameless but we do have "battery" - Pavona maldavensis really does resemble the copper top battery!

Once we added fish to our system , my kids asked if they could name the fish.
And I said "Why would you do that, it doesn't make sense. They don't have ears to hear you call them by their names."
They agreed. End of discussion.

I love to name my pets after coworkers/classmates etc.

My favorite is probably my blue chromis named Dr. Flegal - I picked him up during my undergrad, the same day that my stats teacher was presented with his doctorate degree (his name was Flegal).

I don't but my mother does and it is hard to keep up, she has "her own" tank too.

Six line wrasse - Enda (Apparently he has the mouth of local politican she doesn't like)
Neon Goby - Neo
Pair of cleaner shrimp - Ozzie and Issie
Cardinal - PJ
Fire fish - Rosie.

Some of mine that she has named included

Pair common Clowns - Jack and Jill
Tiny mantis shrimp - Foxy
Pair of cleaner shrimp - Lilly and Harry.

I won't try and remember all the freshwater fish she has named too!!

If I phone home from work I get reports on who ate what, who chased who etc etc and it can a laugh trying to work out who the hell she is talking about

Well I named one last night.... while doing a water change with the hood off I heard a flapping noise coming from a styrofoam box that had about 1" of water in it.. it was a blue/green chromis that jumped out of the tank and landed about 2 feet away and into this 10" X 10" box. I named him Lucky........

I've always wanted to name my fish but never got around to it. When I use names I like to use names of individuals throughout history or famous in culture. For example, Napoleon, Marmaduke, Antoinett & Louise, Hannibal, Jefferson, etc. Weird I know lol but I get a kick out of seeing the name of grand figures in history being reduced to pets in a fish tank.
