I haven't used either for quite some time. Sea Chem is mainly just for saltwater, while api usually does both. But it depends on the test. What test kit were you looking for?

salifert! i have API but i got salifert for the test that didn't come in the package. Very easy to use and very good color coding. Check it out, all the books i've read recommend them along with my LFS

If you want to test for ammonia, nitrates and phosphates really any test will do a decent job. Its hard to get too precise with test kits for these three because its almost impossible to know what kind of phosphate or nitrate you just tested. I just use them to get an approximate idea where the levels are. They will tell you if they are dangerously high, but won't show anything sometimes when your levels are still slightly too high.

But calcium, alkalinity and Mg are worth getting a better test like Salifert or Elos. You can get fairly precise results from them on these tests.

I heard Salifert Ammonia test are hard to read and don't measure down as far as Seachem.

API will be just fine, don't bother buying a phosphate kit though, vertually all of them are not accurate enough to warrent the money. Only certain kits are reliable for phos, and API isn't one IMO.
