my 29g QT tank: Hydor 100w heater.

my thermometer is 79 degrees. (had 150w MH on)

the heater is set at 75 degrees and the light is lit ON?

I work the night shift. yesterday I had it the heater set at 77 degrees and when i came home from work, the temp was 81 degrees. water was very very warm.

Don't ever set a heater by the temperature gauge, set it by a separate thermometer. My heater scales range from zero to seven degrees off, but all the tank temps are dead on where I want them.

Those temp guages on the heater are just guidlines, often off by 5 or more degrees. Get the tank to the temp you want it by watching with a thermometer you trust. When it is there, then you adjust the thremostat on the heater until you see the light blink off. Watch it for a while and see if it is cycling on and off around this sweet spot.
