Lost a new Firefish today...

We picked up a pair of Firefish today, and I came home to find one MIA. I ended up finding him dead just outside of the pistol shrimp's lair. In watching the pistol, I saw him attack a hermit and run him off when he got too close to his lair. This strikes me as a likely possible cause of the lost Firefish especially considering his corpse's proximity to the lair. Are pistols known to attack other fish that enter their lair? If so, I'm thinking that I'll avoid adding any more fish that like to dart into the rocks or at least any smaller species.

The one bit of good news is that this definitely tested the efficiency of my CUC. They had the corpse completely gone in just a few short hours. I'm guessing that since they were so efficient I won't have to worry about much of an ammonia or nitrate spike from his decomp.

Pistols kill firefish and other dartfish. Definitely.

I've never heard this before, and in posting questions here about my proposed stocking scheme this was never brought up as an issue. I'm just trying to say here that I thought I had done my research.

Guess I should try and net the survivor and return him to the LFS.

Any particular reason the pistols target fire and dartfish?

My thought is simply the size of the firefish/dartfish and the pistol viewing it as an invader. I know that firefish love to hide out in the rocks and if they happen to pick the pistol den as a hidy hole, the pistol may simply feel threatened and attack. I'm just hoping that my other firefish is OK and I can get him back to the LFS before he also meets an untimely demise.
