36 corner to 75 gal upgrade. Any concerns with tank cycling?
Hi everyone. I am planning on a tank upgrade this weekend. I have been running my 36 corner for about 4 years. I have everything i need to uprade and im not planning on adding any livestock. I guess my question is do i have to be worried about any type of cylcle? I am adding about 25 ibs of rock, but it has been cured seperately and is ready to go. It will make for a substantial gain in water volume but i have a 5 stage rodi that reads 0 ppm so im assuming this shouldn't be an issue. So, if anyone has any suggestions, or tips it would be much appreciated. Oh.. im going to a 75 gal from a 36. Thanks much. chris.

Disturbing the sand bed will cause a spike. It's not a bad idea to just save a few scoops of the sand bed and use that to seed a new sand bed. Or, save a few scoops of your sand and rinse the rest of it really well. You'll be amazed at how much gunk is in the sand bed once you start removing things and stirring it up.

Thank you.. i was wondering about that. I will need to add a fair amount of sand. The sand bed in my current tank is only about 1.5 inches or so.. Think i will pull out a few scoops when empty and rinse the rest.. Thanks

so you will be adding 25 lbs of rock along with the rock from your 36 gal? I would def take more than a couple scoops, at least 15 lbs of your sand and transfer it....then rinse it if you choose but either way im pretty sure you will have some what of a cycle....if your going to be making this a reef tank def. use all of the sand you have. A 4-6 inch sand bed is very beneficial and will aid in keeping your tank stable for years. I would also look into Miracle Mud, throw some of that in your fuge. Along with some sand and rock, im sure you will see a small nitrate spike followed by a small ammonia rise. Just like your 36g, be patient and you will be able to add livestock before you know it.

yes the 25 ibs plus what i have in 36. roughly 75-80 ibs. The 36 is currently a mixed reef tank.. mostly softies. couple sps. pair of clown, GBTA, yoshi goby, couple shrimp. Im hoping there wont be much of a spike as im increasing volume and not adding more of a load..I have been dabating a deep sand bed but not sure. think i got 40 ibs of sand only 1.5-2 in deep so it cleans easy. may just give it a good vacuum and leave it at that.
Ive heard good and bad on the miracle mud. I guess im more concerned with how much sand to add in the new display??? Dont think i wanna go more than about 4 in. Some people dont use anything and some use about what i have in current tank... i guess i need to do some more research... And no... there are no good lfs near by. gotta drive to davenport or Rockford.. uhhhg. |
