I used a pair of Koralia 2 powerheads in my older 20L and they worked well. The 29g is the same size, just a little taller, so similar flow would work. I'd get a pair of the Koralia Evolution 750's. I have 2 in my 40br and they're great powerheads. I have them working alongside my K2s.
Don't base your choice to get into this hobby around free stuff from your uncle. That's great for start up, but make sure you'll be able to keep up with maintenance costs. You'll have to pay for salt, water (or RO/DI), additives, cures for pests/diseases, etc. It's not impossible, you just have to plan ahead. Priorities shift in college, so be sure you don't blow your tank fund on beer. I can tell you from experience, it's tough not to! haha. I'm not trying to talk you out of the tank, just giving you some things to keep in the back of your nugget as you progress. I think college (and probably HS, I never did it then though) reefing is great. You learn a lot, have an outlet for relaxation and it gets a ton of good attention.

I agree with cody. A reef tank for a high school kid looking at getting out of the house shortly probably isn't the best idea. This is one of those cases where I think I'd reverse some of the recommendations on going large and suggest instead you look at a nano tank. I had a 55 gallon african cichlid tank in college and it was a pain to move. Moving a reef tank is a job you won't want to do once or twice a year. Somthing to think about.
