I use them, I get them from work, they have de-calcifyer and other "bad" chemicals in them. But I wash them out extremely well and long. This is how I do it: dump out all the dry powder/residue. wash out with a garden hose. then I stick it outside and put the down spout from my rain gutter into it and leave it there for months to let the rain do a number on it. Then I run my discharge waste water from my ro/di into it for a couple months worth of making ro. Then I run my old water change, water into it for a couple months. Then I wash out real good with ro/di. After about 6 or 7 months I feel safe to put it online into my water making system.

that does sound scary, specially that de-calcifyer. I was told I should reuse my tank water and save as much as I an for moving the tank. Do you know if thats true?

I've always heard it's "recommended" to reuse as much of the tank water as possible but I don't know the reasoning behind it.
I've reused maybe 5-10 gallons from when I went from 20g to 55g & from 55g to 75g. And that was mostly to keep my fish wet while I was making new water for them. If you're making a long move I'd probably just use what I need to keep the fish safe & to keep the rocks wet. Since you don't know what's in those drums you're taking a bigger risk using them than you are by discarding your tank water & making all new water. |
