Overflow and Sump questions

I am looking to maybe add an overflow and sump to my 38Gal. reef tank
The sump wll be a 40 Gal. breader and be 3.5' below the tank.

I would like the display tank to have it's water level 1" - 1.5" from the top, is that OK or will it need to be 2" - 2.5" ?

I will be using either a Eshopps PF300 or Eshopps PF800 and a SCWD

So which would you recomend and which pump

Also is there a reactor for GFO/Carbon that can handle full flow so as to add it to the return or will that need to be a separate pump ?

I would run a separate pump for the reactor, they are usually cheap and small. If you can drill your tank and put an overflow in that way I would recommend it. However a lot of tanks are tempered, and tempered glass shatters when you try to drill it.

Drilling is out as the tank has been up and running for almost two years and only have 4" of access in the rear and likely tampered glass. Just not willing to risk it with this tank, next tank will be drilled first

PF300 should be fine. Mag Drive 3 return pump should work well. Maybe a Mag Drive 5 (with ball valve) depending on number and type of elbows in your return.
