Pump size and brand
After my 55 split I got a great deal on a new 90. Looking for a new return pump and though I'd look for suggestions.
I'm thinking I need something with about 900/gal/hour at 5 feet (top rim of tank) for a good 10 X's exchange - think I read that somewhere. Looking in the magazines the Quiet One Pumps 5000 or 6000 fits the bill. These any good? My old 55 had one in it and it's still running after about 22 year non-stop. What brands do you suggest? Which pump? I may want to go bigger to run a skimmer? or my Phosban reactor and/or a carbon reactor. Again, suggestions Thanks |

Fantastic, that tells me the turns I'll have cut the flow by quite a bit --- So my question still is
What is the recommended turnover and are the Quiet One pumps good? Thanks |

I have a mag 12 and am very happy with it. I believe it will give you the 10x turnover you are wanting.

Running the calculator with a 5' vertical, 0 horizontal, two 90 degrees bends and their standard output diameter (3/4 for all but the 6000 which is 1") the GPH is....
Mag 12 796 mag 18 847 Q1 5000 628 Q1 6000 867 Nice to know you like your Mag 12 - the 6000 is about the same price as the Mag 12 now does anyone know about the Quiet One's quality - been trying to get the best for my money and so far the Q1 looks like it's there BUT if it fails soon what good is it.... Thanks |

I would calculate for what you want going on in your sump such as skimmer volume and so forth. A few but not many I know create all the in tank circulation through there return. Most people supplement what they don't get through there returns via closed loop systems or power heads in the display tank. I like about 800 to 900 GPH going through my sump it is the same in my 100 and my old 180 (soon to be set back up darn moving).
As for turnover target for a 90 all depends on what you want to keep in the DT anywhere from 10 to 50 times. In my 100 I have 2 Iwaki 20"s running from my sump to DT. This gives me just about 800 GPH to the display running through the sump. I prefer 2 pumps cause god forbid something happened to one of them while I was gone the other would keep going avoiding a disaster. Even though with Iwaki probably never going to happen I am just paranoid like to sleep well at night LOL. Then I got 2 mp40's in the DT running near there 3200 gallon an hour mark on short pulse mode. So full circulation in DT is about 40 time a hour. High but it is SPS so not really. So as you can see that is one way of doing it but in this hobby everyone does things a bit different. This would be my humble opinion though. |

Turnover through a sump is typically 3-5X per hour. Sooooo......270gph-450gph are your target flow rates through the sump.
The rest of the Display Tank flow is handled through other means.

I would recommend the Eheim hobby pumps. Kind of expensive but they seem to be very reliable.

My upcoming 120 build is going to be a Eheim or Ocean runner, hear nothing but good things about them. Currently running a QO4000, cool quiet and no complaints.

+1 for Dots. 3-5, maybe as high as 7x. But the more you move thru the overflow, the louder and the quicker a problem can occur. I like the Q1 over the mags due to heat transfer. The mags can heat things up. I've used Q1 3000,4000,5000, and 6000 with zero problems. They can stick if you suck up a bunch of sand, but all pumps will do that. Good luck.

Quiet One pumps aren't exactly quiet and they tend to throw off more heat than some others. Otherwise, nothing wrong with them. One tip is that, whatever pump you choose, standardize on it and keep a spare. I personally use Mag pumps because they haven't failed me and are a decent value.

You'll find pumps are sometimes like cars. Some like GM, others like Ford, others go with the foreign brands (and there will be bickering amongst them as to which is best). That said, I've been happy with my Mag pump so far.

What about level of sound? Who is the quietest? I have heard several people say the "Quiet One" is not quiet at all. So far the only noise from my tank is the cheap return I have and need to get it quieted down.

I consider the MAG pump to be kinda like an inline 300 ford maybe not the fastest or the most streamline but I just cant seam to beat the reliability.
