Parasite

This should probably be in the fish disease forum, but it doesn't seem like it gets a lot of traffic.

Anyways, my yellow watchment goby it looks like it is swollen underneath his chin. He also now has red dots around his lips. He's still swimming around fine and eating and seems otherwise healthy. Does he have some sort of parasite or disease in his mouth? Is there something I need to do?

I really can't answer, but a pic would go a long way to someone being able to answer.

Here is the best I could do. Try to zoom in anymore and it goes too fuzzy. You can kind of see the red around his bottom lip.

The red looks like an abrasion but I've seen sores on fish we catch in samples that are red and nasty looking but the fish shows no ill effects. Generally, it is a secondary infection due to injury--i.e. another fish takes a bite, etc.

I would recommend doing a couple of things. First, keep a close eye on him and check for progression. If it does not change for the worse or gets better, great. If it does seem to get worse I would move it to a hospital tank and treat for bacterial and fungal infections. I'm not a parasitologist, so I really cannot give you anymore than that.

Also, make sure your water params are spot on--that can make all the difference in the world especially if your fish is ill.

HTH and good luck. Keep us posted.
