How long?

I recently started a 40 Breeder with 40 lbs of BRS dry Eco-Rock and 5 lbs of well established live rock. I added a bottle of cycle starting bacteria (brand name escapes me) and I got a small ammonia spike followed by an increase in nitrates and now a big diatom bloom.

My question is how long before the coraline from the live rock grows on the dry rock?

Aaron

This depends a lot on the calcium levels. Do you know what the level is?

I don't. I've tested for every other parameter at this point and all are normal. RO/DI water from the start and no livestock so I've got to assume (I know, I know) its normal.

Thanks. I'll be patient. Its only been a couple of weeks but the way the diatom bloom is spreading kind of freaks me out.

the bloom is normal... you need to add a small CUC soon. You need to test your calcium the term normal is very loosely used to most. If you keep the tank around 450ppm you should see corline growth within 2-3 months.

Might take a while. Just be patient, relax, and watch it grow.

Started my tank in late October with dry rock. Put some coralline covered live rock in in early November. Been dosing calcium since December. Just noticed some small spots of coralline on my powerheads today. So...it takes a while!

Diatom bloom will burn itself out pretty quickly (a few weeks maybe) depending on available silicates. Next will likely be a cyano bloom. My cyano in the refugium is completely gone now and is just now getting under control in the DT. Started in the fuge in December and in the DT a month later.
