Probably beenasked but;
How often do you swap out filter socks, every couple days, once a week? Also what is the best way to clean them? I am thinking about using them but I work offshore 5-6 days a week and don't want to put my wife through anymore things to do while I am gone.

Every other day. It is probably a good idea not to use them in your situation. I am gone up to 2 weeks at a time. No way I would use them regularly on my system.
What you can do with them is to put one on and blow off the rocks. Once the water clears up remove the bag. Generally cleaning them involves a little pre rinsing, some bleach, and a clean washer. With the HE machines these days and all the different concentrations of laundry detergent most people are using WAY too much detergent. I found I was using 3x too much after some trial and error. The new stuff is just too powerful and tends to leave surfactants in the washer which will cause skimmer to go nuts or do nothing at all. So before washing bags make sure to run the washer once or twice prior to adding the bags and bleach.

Wow, didn't think it would be that often. I can't put this on my wife to do, she takes care of it alot when I'm gone. Guess I just stick to sucking everything out of my sump every two weeks when I do a water change. Thanks
