Fuge Questions...
I have a 29g tank that is set up in a nice spot to drain back into my DT.
1) Is there a reason to use anything but chaeto? 2) Is there a reason to have a sandbed? Seems like a DSB would work better in a remote bucket? 3) What kind of lighting should I use, I have a leftover PC strip, but from what I see that seems a little much? Thanks |

it doesn't take much light to grow macro algae, but if you have the pc it wouldn't hurt to use it.

It will be less expensive to run a couple of 16 watt compact florescent spot lights (available at Lowe's or Home Depot for around $7.00 each). I would use rubble rock in addition to the cheato.

Are there any other macroalgae/plants that I could add to the fuge for some diversity that aren't too hard to care for or like dangerous lol?

In my fuge, I use a 6" dsb, a bunch of LR (mostly rubble), cheato, and now there is some halimeda (sp?) as well.

2 - remote deep sand beds have a lot of filtration potential. if you have room they are a good idea. some people don't like them because they sometimes get "spent" and need replacing, and it can get dirty and difficult to clean if your remote sand bed is not easy to access 3 - its not that its too much, but it could also be a bit of a waste. people just use those cheap clip on lights with a grow light twisty bulb. i used to use an old PC light and i guess the spectrum was more for corals and less for plants so my macroalgae didn't grow as fast as it does now with daylight grow bulbs in a T5 fixture (i have a 30" long display fuge and didn't want to put 2 clip lights to cover the fuge)
