uv Glass for MH

well cleaning my MH lights today the UV Glass fell off the table and broke. This is a 150w DE MH and i have heard that the screw in MH lights has a built in UV protection in the light its self but I dont know about the DE. So my question is can you run DE MH light with out the UV Glass covering?

same happened to me and I was told DE have no protection at all so running it without the glass wouldn't be a good idea.

Mogul base bulbs have the built in UV shield (outer case) but is also recommended to use a glass splash shield to protect from exploding due to a splash.
You need to have that glass replaced before you power the bulb again; nice about it is you may buy a low Iron/Starphire tempered piece of glass.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I'm in the same boat at the OP, and have no idea who the manufacturer is of the fixture. I'm curious what you mean by 'low iron / starphire tempered piece of glass'. I can't find any local glass shop that carries what I want...

Thanks!

Any local glass shop can get a tempered piece of glass, low Iron/Starfire is a bin nicer and pricier, ultra clear glass might be called.
Local glass shops know what a tempered glass is, if they don't know, they are in the wrong business.
Regular glass has a green tint, low Iron/Starfire (trade mark name) lacks the green look.

I'm not asking about whether a local shop would have tempered glass, I'm asking about the UV filtering glass. If the only thing 'low iron' means is that is clearer, it doesn't help in my quest. It doesn't matter if the glass is ultra-clear if I'm going to get skin cancer, go blind, and kill all my corals because the UV radiation isn't rejected.

Anyone else have a source, any source, where I can custom order this? Obviously, the folks that make these fixtures can get it, so it must be available, but I've been searching on and off all day, as well as calling glass shops, and no one has what they would consider to be UV-filtering glass for this application.

Is all glass UV filtering? I'm pretty sure that isn't the case but that's why I'm asking here.

You cannot run a DE MH bulb without the glass filter. It's not safe for your tank or your eyes. I was under the impression that any glass was appropriate. Please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. Problem with tempered glass is you can't cut it.

Any tempered glass will work for the MH light; I've done it to nano mods using DE bulbs, you have to order the tempered size correctly; regular plate glass will crack due to the intense heath; another option is ceramic glass but is pricey !!

There's UV filtering glass, the kind used for picture framing to prevent fading on the pictures.
