piping in sump trapping air, how to quiet?

on my overflow for my 55 i have the drain going to a bubble tower. the pvc goes into the water about an inch or so but there is a lot of air trapped in the piping therefor causing a lot of bubbles and noise. the bubbles arent a problem but the noise is since the tank is in my room.

to quiet the noise i was thinking of drilling a hole somewhere on the last 6" of the PVC pipe that is vertical but im concerned about water also escaping that hole. should i just drill a hole in the pvc pipe about an inch above the water line so i dont have to worry about water escaping the hole? or would i be best to take off the pipe, cut it shorter so it stops about half an inch above the waterline and that would quiet the bubble noise? but wouldnt that cause the sound of running water? i guess that isnt as bad as pop pop pop...

thoughts?

thanks in advanced

Is it possible to shorten the pipe and add a 90 deg elbow on the bottom of the pipe so that it is half in the water and half out? Or add a T in the piper right above the water line, do it so the odd side of the T is horizontal if that makes sence. Not sure if it would help but its worth a try.

i thought about putting an elbow in there but idk if itll fit. i have that one another drain and its dead silent, ight owuld be easier to drill a hole in the pipe if thatll silence it.

What kind of overflow do you have set up? Might post pics of the overflow and sump, might help get different ideas.

im thinking of doing that on another build but i cant on this one because it uses a HOB overflow and the problem i have is releasing the bubbles when the pipe meets the water.

i have tried drilling the pipe before and you end up trading one type of noise for another. But it may slightly quieter. Just have a spare pipe handy in case it doesnt work out for you.

You could also put a wye in between the vertical pipe. buy a cap for the other part of the wye and drill a hole in it. that helped me.
