Question Sump Help.

Hey guys.

This is my first time using a tank with a sump so I have some questions.
My tank is a 40B and Has a 1" Bulkhead for the Overflow and a 3/4 bulkhead for the return.

-What size pipe do I need to use? Do i need a certain size for the overflow, and return pipes?

-What type of PVC pipe? There are like 3 different types.

-Do I glue the PVC together with Pipe Glue? If so what Kind? permentant or removable?

-Also what type of silicon do I use to glue in my baffles in my sump.

-What type of return pump do I need?

-How thick do my baffles need to be? 1/4"?

-what should I use for my baffles? Plexiglass?
Thanks

Critofer

Well I'm guessing you have a built in overflow.
If you plan on making a dusro pipe. You need to use 1-1/4" PVC pipe. If you use one 1", it will make a lot of noise.
Here is the site I used to make one mine. Follow the directions carefully.

You can use scheduled 40 PVC pipe with PVC cement. I use this brand and model.

You have to glue all your piping so it doesn't leak. The stand pipe doesn't have to be but you can if you want. Best not unless you want to make small changes.

I used this silcone for my baffles and it works great.

As for the return pump. Depends on how much your overflow can handle. I would lean towards a 400gph pump if your overflow can handle it.

1/4" is a decent size for your baffles. It wont break easy.

Acyrlic wont stock to glass. It will but it wont be strong. The chemical reaction with acrylic and aquarium safe silcone causes them not to stick. You can go to any glass store and have them cut it for you. This will garentee that those baffles will never come loose over time.

I have read and reread that like on durso pipes. I am SOO confused. I think I will just screw on a 90* Elbow onto the bulk head and run a pipe into my sump. How big should the pipe be if I do it how i want to do it? 1 or 1-1/4, ID or OD?

Thanks

Critofer

If you don't plan on using a durso you may have problems with constant gurgling in your overflow.

It's pretty easy bro.

All you got to do is make your durso with 1-1/4" piping and have it reduced with a reducer fitting down to 1" to fit in your bulkhead.

There is a big debate on acrylic sticking to glass here. Many have done it with success. But there is a looming potential failure. Personally I had glass cut for baffles. Money wise it was as cheap as acrylic. The bonus part is having that sense of security that my baffles won't come unsealed in the future. I would rather take a little time now and do it right than try repairing a up and running tank. jmo
