Chromis would be safe, maybe a yellowtail and chromis. Honestly, a clown IS a damsel, and they can be pushy. The percs and skunks are gentlest: the red ones, cinnamons, tomatos and maroons, have the disposition of piranha on steroids, and Clarkiis will readily attack--you. I'm more worried about the damsel being roughed up by the clown, until you get into the tougher damsels like the blue velvet, who, in my tank, held her own with Clarkiis. By nano, I assume you mean a larger nano.

To be more specific, I have a 20 gallon tank. I was thinking about either a green chromis or yellowtail damselfish. I'm just not sure if my ocellaris clowns will fight or not.

a 20 is awfully tiny. One chromis with your clowns. The ocellaris are pretty laid back, but would probably enjoy a 50 gallon when you get a little deeper into the hobby. Definitely get an autotopoff to keep that salinity steady!
