Recommended salt mix
I am interested in making my own salt water for water changes and wanted suggestions on what brands people use.

I've been using Reef Crystals salt for about a year now and am very happy with it. The trace elements seems well balanced for SPS/LPS growth.

Instant Ocean is too low in calcium. You spend all your time dosing. |

I've used Instant Ocean and Oceanic. No problems with either.

I used IO for a little over a year and would always get a brown film in my mixing bucket. I recently switch to Reef Crystals and no gross rim! I have only done one small water change with it so I don't know of the chemical advantages yet, but am happy nothing died when I put it in.

+1 Reef Crystals. Less expensive, generally available, good levels of Alk, Cal, and Mag.

Usually IO, but I've used many others; Reef Crystals is probably the one I've used second most. Haven't noticed tremendous advantages any particular type.

IMO they are all pretty much the same. IO measures nicely in Ca, Alk & Mg. It used to be notorious for being Ca deficient but I am nearly certain they changed their formula recently Although they have not owned up to it. IO is typically cheapest out there and is rock solid in terms of stability. It has not let me down in 20 years

I don't see spending the extra on Reef Crystals for all the "trace minerals" and what-not. I use Instant Ocean, and my 5 month old tank has perfect levels of calcium, KH, Magnesium, etc. The only reason to get Reef Crystals would be if you have corals and need a large surplus of Ca,Mg,Mn,etc.

I have tried Reef Crystals, Oceanic, Instant Ocean, and Seachem Salinity. I am back to Instant Ocean because as others have said it is the cheapest and reliable. The Seachem Salinity was nice since it was batch tested and told you the exact levels of everything in the bucket you purchased but it was pricey.

Aquavitro Salinity. Within hours of the first water change I used with it, the polyps on my sarco leather had never been more extended. Guaranteed lab tested numbers with good alk pH and Ca and all the traces. Worth the price imo
