eheim versus waterblaster
I'm putting together an 85 gallon setup that I picked up used from a fellow RC-er nickrosenthal. I'm trying to decide between return pumps, one problem is the hole drilled is for a tiny return (1/2"). I'm debating between an eheim 1260 or 1262 versus a waterblaster hy-3000w or hy-5000w.
There's not a lot of info on the water blaster pumps, but they seem to consume less power than eheim. Has anyone compared these two pumps on their own tank? How do other attributes compare (noise, size, reliability, startup, etc)? Also if anyone is selling any of these 4 pumps used for a good price, I would be quite interested! |

I love the Eheim pumps, for a 85 gallon you don't need the 1262. Go with the 1260.

Eheim, made in Germany(or someplace in Europe)
WaterBlaster, made in China.

The incredible finish, box full of all kinds of adapters, very, very low noise level, superb quality, and lower electricity usage of the waterblaster get my vote. Along with the warranty (either 3 or 5 yrs, I forget). Oh, don't forget the nitride shaft that calcifying algae cannot grow on.

waterblaster 100%! eheims are good quality but energy hogs for their output. Plus you get 3 years warranty on the waterblaster

3 years for Eheim as well, who's had a water blaster running for more than 5 years? This is not uncommon for Eheim, however, sounds like there are benefits to both.
I think if longevity is there for water blasters then it simply comes down to preference. Good luck with your selection. Quote:

no one these are new pumps man, PCIscott needs to chime in here but I know these are high quality pumps and will last. I actually use ATI flowstar 1800 but they are pricey ($450!), I am probably going to get the waterblaster 5000 for my display, 1300 GPH at 60 watts and $200 you cant beat that! Plus a three year warranty, no other pump can match that.......

Look into Tunze Return pumps. If your looking at a Eheim 1260, look at the Tunze 1073.040 They use a lot less power and put out more water then Eheim and cost $28.00 less to boot! I have one and love it. Tunze also sells bigger return pumps, but not many places stock them. That should be plenty for an 85 gallon tank.
Tunze 1073.040: 3,000 l/h (792 USgal./h). Energy consumption: 42 W. Pumping head: 3 m (118.1 in.). $137.81 eheim 1260 635 gph. Energy consumption:65W. Pumping head:12'1" $164.99

They also make a controllable Tunze silence now. Would be nice for day / night simulations..

My Water Blaster works great (HY-7000). I chose it over the Eheim because of energy/heat considerations, but you can't go wrong with either pump IMO.

Yes, post some feedback when you guys get them. I was thinking of going with a Tunze return pump if my eheim ever goes out. This eheim 1262 is several years old and still going strong.
