Refugium additions
Added a sand bed to my refugium today. Ive always had cheato in there but I went ahead and added some LR from my display and two inches of sand.
I probably need to increase the flow here too.Ive just got the one drain that T's and drops about 75% of the water into the skimmer chamber and the rest flows to the fuge. The reason for this fuge "beef-up" is Im having some cyano outbreaks . I also plan to add a GFO reactor within the next 2 weeks.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you split some of your return into the refugium? What made you go that round instead of just dumping it all into your protein skimmer section?
I'm in the process in setting up my tank and I am definitely going to put and and LR in my refugium. I think having a few pieces of prime LR going straight to the refugium should give the pods and bacteria plenty of time to grow without harassment. In my opinion, that's the way to go! Good luck with your cyano outbreaks. How old is your tank? From what I understand they are plenty common in tanks under 9 months old or so. |

I did it because my sump is a 55 gallon split 3 ways equally Skimmer | Return | Refugium and the left and right chambers dump into the middle to be returned.

Oh, I see. It gives you more control over the amount of flow in your refugium I have seen a few designs like that and never really understood why someone would do that over Skimmer | Return | Refugium. I may have to give that a shot for my tank, as I have not yet started the plumbing or created the baffles.

Thank you very much for the link. From the brief bit I saw of it, you have a beautiful tank. Not sure if it is something you keep an eye on, but do you notice enough pods making it from your sump to your display? That is really my only concern with that kind of setup as I plan on having a Mandarin Dragonet.

Thank you ! When I first set it up my Mag 7 return pump had a sponge pad over the intake.Once I removed that , pods galore in the display tank.
