What Pump should I get??? 135g w/50g sump.

Hi Guys,

I'm starting a new tank. 135 gallons with a 50 gallon sump. Never did a project like this before and am wondering what kind of pump I should get...

Brand? GPH??

Any advice would be great!

An Eheim 1260 would be a great pump for your system.

Thanks! I'll look that up!

One more question.

If I have 1200 GPH with a Fuge in the middle, will that be too much waterflow in the Fudge? Should I put the Fuge at the end with the return in the middle?

its all about contact time imo, so the faster it goes the less contact time the fuge gets with the water
ive always been a big believer of slower returns from the sump and use either powerheads or closed loops for flow in the system
i like eheims and oceanrunners personally, low wattage and very quiet

Do you think I should get a pump with less gph? how much gph is sufficient?

Also, if I have two 750 GPH Circulation pumps in the 135 display tank (72" long x 18 x 25) Will that be too much current??

Lastly, is Ehiem better than RIO in pumps?

Thanks guys!

you want 3-5 times your 135g. 400-700gph after your head pressure.
Eheim is much better than rio, so is a mag drive.

Thanks for the input. The guy at the fish store told me to get around 900 GPH.. seems high.. wonder why he would tell me that.

Personal I like to stay around 3 to 5 times the system volume through the sump. My system is closer to 3 times. Some interesting discussion on low flow sumps.

Thank you for the links!

I'm in the process of re-working my pumps and was seriously considering a low flow sump. This thread and the links pretty much sold me.

Our tank is a 150, I'm thinking of using an Eheim 1260 for the sump. And a pair of Vortech MP40w's for additional flow in tank. So that puts me at about a bit less than 4 x volume after head height in the sump.

I'm a big believer in Eheim pumps, so I'd definitely go that route. I have a 1260 on my 65 and will use the same pump on my new 60g cube. I just restrict the flow with a ball valve to get the flow I want. This 1260 has gone strong for over 5 years, restarts every single time, and doesn't even get cleaned that often. Solid solid pumps.
