my powerhead killed my shrimp!

I posted this in one of my other threads but I decided to make it it's own thread so I would get quicker responses...

I just found my new peppermint shrimp (purchased bout 8 hours ago) half in and half out of the grate in the face of my koralia powerhead.
he was swimming around at the top of the tank and started climbing on the powerhead and here he lies at the bottom of the tank motionless now that I have freed him.
he does not appear to have touched the impeller but he is certainly dead...

what can I do in the future to prevent this from happening again?

Are you sure it's not a molt? The little guy may have molted after you put it in the tank, and could be in hiding....it may show back up in another day.

My shrimp climb around on the powerheads all the time and have never been injured. I'm inclined to think it might have just molted too. I really hope thats what happened atleast.

I agree with the others. It's pretty common for a shrimp to molt right after being acclimated and placed in a new tank. If it's not a molt, sorry for the quick demise.

I freaked to when my little molted. It looked just like him. I found him hiding in a cave with a turbo snail. Hope you find him ok.

I agree with the molting assessment.

However, if he was killed by a powerhead, chances are he wasn't doing to well to begin with. I know this is of little consolation, I just wanted to mention it.

+1, Probably a molt, I wouldn't think the powerhead would be able to suck it in unless it was weak or dead already. If it is dead, how did you acclimate it? Most shrimp need to be acclimated to the tank slowly.

I agree with the consensus of molting.

If it is a molt, you can determine it pretty fast... as it'll be a shell of the shrimp. Give it a look, if there's a shrimp in that shell, sorry for your loss. If there's water, your shrimp is in hiding following a molt. My fire shrimp molts once every two weeks or so.

it is most certainly not a molt. I keep ghost shrimp in my freshwater tanks and I am familiar with the difference.

I am running 2 1400 GPH powerheads so they do have a bit of power but I saw him climbing on them and he looked like he had enough strength to get away from them.
it almost looked like he climbed onto the face of the powerhead and tried to go inside through the front guard.

Whoa, a koralia killed your shrimp. Probably the shrimp wasn't doing too well to begin with. Koralia powerheads already have grates on the sides so nothing can get in expect water. If you are still worried, you can get a pantyhose and wrap the powerhead.

Is it controlled by a wavemaker? I mean, is it possible he got in there while it wasn't running or did he go in against the flow?

I find those shrimp to be the least likely to survive very long.

My skunk shrimp loves to molt on my Koralia powerhead. Does it nearly with every molt now. Not sure, but my guess is it helps 'suck' the shell off? I've had the shrimp for about a year now.

Sounds like that one was potentially on the way out and ended up in a bad spot though.. sucks

You can build a 'cage' for your powerhead out of fishing line and Gutter Guard plastic from Lowe's.

I have shrimp that climb all over my EVO 1400 and never have a problem, maybe you got a sick shrimp or maybe you messed up in your acclimation some how

I floated the bag and after 20 minutes I began to add 1/4 cup of water every 5 minutes (small bag) until it was full at which point I netted and released him

I also added a cleaner shrimp, 2 hermits, and a flame angel at the same time. the flame angel I added 1 cup at a time due to the larger bag and water volume
