I currently have 1 mp40 on a 48 x 18 x24 90 gallon tank .... and do not think it is nearly enough flow by itself.... and this is with an open aquascape and minimal livestock - I have a 2nd one coming. Two might be overkill but I can run one or both at less than max if it is.

As far as getting a wave ..... don't think it can be done with just one!

I have two MP40w on my 4x2x2 120 gal. I have them on opposite sides running lagoon random in anti-sync mode. Works great for SPS tanks.

If you are going mostly soft and LPS, one MP40 would be fine. We had a display 120 gal at the LFS and it only had one MP40, looked great!

IMO, waves are over rated and put stress on the seams of your tank. Random movement is all that's needed.

A second MP40 would be ideal. Especially if you have a lot of rockwork.

I had an mp 40w for my 75 on wave mode. After a month it busted the seems on my tank.
I upgraded to a 90 gallon with thicker glass. I continued to run on short pulse mode but eventually switched to reef crest mode.
I have a mixed reef. Mostly soft corals and lps. 1 mp 40w was perfect. Anymore flow and my frogspawns , torches and hammers would have receded.
Just my two cents.

1 MP40 would be fine for soft coral and lps. If you have SPS you'll probably want two or a MP40 + a MP10.

not in my opinion, i have 2 on my 75g, and i wouldnt min another 10-20% out of them, but i am very happy with'em... without 2, you wont have the same turbulent, random flow and you would have a dead side of the tank... they are made to work together, and can control water motion even further by having 2 working together...

amazing little pumps, the best investment i have made for my system... whether you end up with 2 or not, they are well worth even 1...

btw, i dont use any wave modes, agreed with above, not good for your tank at all... i use anti-sync'd, tidal crest mode, with some full power constant speed for at least a couple hours a day as well

Any Vortech pump over the MP20 was meant to be run in pairs. That is not an opinion, it is in the manual (not in those words). I have two MP40's that made my old 90gal SPS corals grow 6 to 8 inches a year. Now that I upgraded to 72x24x24 and I think I am going to get two more...or maybe two MP60's???

I have two mp40s - 60x18x30. reef crest mode @ 100% is just right. It's like a treadmill for fish.

I have 1 in my 120 (48 x 24 x 24) on the left side. Works fine. Reef crest mode at about 75%. I did add a Korallia 4 on the other side that goes on 5 minutes every hour just to kick things up a bit.

I ran one on my 6x2x2 180 for over a year in lagoon mode full power. Everything was fine, my sps were growing just fine for my liking. I did add another one a few months ago and the flow is obviously better but I think it did fine with one. If you can get two then do that but if the budget limits you to one for now do that and save up for the next one.

It's really just your preference, give both a try and see what you and your corals like better.
