pump, in or out?
I'm building my sump and wanted a little feedback. I was wondering if I should mount my pump inside sump or out? What do you all think? Does anybody out there have a pump located outside sump? I was thinking it might be better outside. I'm getting back into hobby and last setup I had I had it inside. But I notice rust and also was wondering about heat from pump as well. I appreciate the feedback on the pros/cons of this.

If you're concerned with heat having an external pump is they way to go. I have had tanks with internal and external pumps and if given the choice an external is the way to go. there is very little heat transfer, the only down side that I have is, that it takes up more room outside the tank.

Yeah think I'm going to go with outside. I was wondering about the noise too but still going to try outside. If i don't like it I can always put inside. Win win situation. Thanks for the input...

Is the sump inside the stand or in a basement. External pumps are generally a lot louder then internal pumps. I run a 100 gallon sump in my basement with an external gen-x pump. I would not want that thing upstairs where the tank is!

Generally, smaller pumps are better internal, when you get to large tanks and sumps, and thus larger pumps, you're going to go external. The only drawback to external besides noise is the additional bulkhead and plumbing fittings to leak.

For a 55G tank I'd look at running a small Ehiem inside the sump. Those tanks are renowned for being quiet and efficient movers of water. Get 1260 and you'll have about 10X turnover on your tank with a near silent pump that's very easy to plumb into your system.

I agree, it depends on the size of the pump. But for most tanks my vote is for inside. I did outside last time and I hated it. It was a pain to get to, impossible to get off and clean and another possibility of a leak to worry about

Yeah that's what I have is an eheim 1260 pump. I've been quit happy with it. But I was wondering if I should go up one size. I heard you lose something like 5gph on elbow bends and what not. I think I'm going to have about 5 bends and about 3 1/2 ft to go from sump to tank. My guess is I lose about 30 gph with this setup. But the more I think of it I'm going to just put in sump. Thanks for all your help.

Instead of 90's use 45 elbows where you can. If you pick up a 1262 you'll probably have 500-600gph at 3.5' with some bends in the plumbing.
