If you had to choose one large tang for a 300 gallon reef..

Which would you pick?

I want to keep big tangs to a minimum. My tank is going to be all SPS and I want to avoid a bunch of accidental frags. I want all three of these but I think I should just pick one:

Blue Hippo

Sohal

Blond Naso

Which would you pick? My tank is 96" x 30" x 24".

I voted Sohal but the blonde naso is another good option!

Blue hippo. Large fish and very colorful. Mine picks up crabs and carries them around the tank. Great character in that fish.

Naso.

Sohals get mean, period! Naso will eat from your hand, let you pet, (mine did) and they're just more docile. Get along with basically everyone, and just an awesome fish.

I would definitely never consider a Sohal. I voted for Naso.

I used to have a big 12" male Blond Naso with long streamers. Favorite fish of all time. He kicked the bucket a while ago. He'd be kinda of hard to replace. I also suspect he was responsible for a lot of accidental frags in the sand.

I have a small blue hippo now and I'm debating whether or not to put him in the new tank. I've seen him pick on some of the smaller fish in my exsisting tank. I've also seen a lot of bigger Blue Hippo's get all tattered and have blotchy colored skin.

I've always loved Sohals. I'd love to get on for my new tank but I'm not digging the whole aggression thing. I wonder if the Achilles would keep him in check.

I've always loved Sohals too, but they're just too aggressive, IMO. Seriously, with a 300, if you want a blonde Naso or a Blue... get both! I had both in my 180 and they never even looked at each other. Any blue tang I've kept has always been shy and really kept to himself. Nasos and blues, to me anyway, seem like the most docile of tangs. Yellows, purples, PBT, etc, all can be mean. But, I guess it just ultimately depends on the fish.

My vote would be both the Naso and Blue.

Blue Hippos also have a habit of turning non-reef safe, which is not fun

Good points.. I know they'd get along but I want to keep my big fish bioload to a minimum. They're both big poopers..

If you already have an achillies, then make sure you get a docile tang! NOT A Sohal !

achillies are pretty timid and due to their fragility/ proneness to dying from Ich outbreaks it is best to add a tank mate that wont induce stress. If it were me and i already had a thriving achilles , I would think twice about adding another acanthurus tang.
What about zebrasoma tangs? would be a better choice since zebrasoma tangs and acanthurus tangs generally wont fight cause their body shapes are so different they don't recognize eachother as tangs.
just food for thought

How about an orange shoulder? I know it's not on the list, but I love my orange shoulder. Actually, none of my tangs are on your list...
