Protecting Float Sensors From Water

I just received my float sensors and they say to keep the top part of the sensor away from water. They suggested buying some sort of adapter that screws on top of the sensor and then attaching some vinyl tubing over the adapter and running that up above the water level in the sump. They also said to silicone the connections to help keep them water free.

I can screw the adapter on top of the sensor but should I use some teflon tape on the threads?

It's only if you planned on keeping the sensor submerged.
