What type of stand is it? Does it have four legs? Or is it a cabinet style?

I would consider cutting a wedge the full length of the base. Say it is 1'' off level in 4' . start at 1/2'' at one end and finish at 1 1/2'' at the other end. That way you can rip a 1/2'' piece for the left side and a 1 1/2'' rip for the other side. Turn the stand upside down and glue and nail the pieces to the bottom. You will get full support this way. Some people will just shim the end up with no support between the ends. That is not a good idea for a large tank. It could cause the cabinet to fail with all the stress on only the ends.
This is only one way to do it. There are more than proper ways to do it. How large is the tank? How fer off level is it? How in love are you with the carpet? It could be cut out from underneath and saved to be replaced at a later date. |

if you have agood table saw you can just rip a 4' piece(2 of them) starting about 1/8" and go to 5/8" and tack to bottom of stand, and then check for level again

DONOT try to cut a wedge on a table saw freehand. You will need to make a tapering jig. You run a VERY high risk of kickback without the rig. VERY unsafe.
