Fuge Question

My fuge has all kinds of algae in it. Is this normal? Do people clean out their fuges on a regualr basis? I have a couple inches of sand, some live rock and cheato in mine. Also, what type, if any, CUC would you recommend?

Thanks!

Are you talking about Algae in addition to your chaeto? I don't see any harm on it since nutrients will be soaked up in your fuge which is the intent right? I put one cerinth snail in my fuge just to watch him go around, try not to stock it with too much stuff.

Yes, algae in addition to chaeto. I also have some cyano algae and others. Doesn't make it to the DT but wanted to make sure I shouldn't be doing more.

It has been my experience that the cleanest tanks have the nastiests sumps. I've seen more than a few. You gotta have some algae somewhere right? Why not in the fuge? The cyano there cleans out whatever cyano likes so it can't get into the DT where we don't want it.

cyano is bacteria that looks like algae. less flow and low mag and salicates are to blame. i would syphon most out and increase flow and check magnesium levels. also reducing u lights will help and for immediate effect u can cut lights out for 3-4 days or use chemi clean.
