recommended mag dosage?
im looking to kill off the hair algae in my tank, it is in my 20G i just bought a 500ml of tech M. I heard you will need to maintain a mag level of 1600, now do i just pour in half of the bottle and let it settle for a week? or how should i dose it and the volume? thanks

Why would you think that Mag would kill the hair algae? I'm still learning but never heard that. Maybe Randy from the Chemistry Forum can shed some light on this. Sk8r may also help on this.
It is good to keep the mag. inline. What is you mag. now? Never dose into the unknown and mag. should be about 1320-1350 range. Also if that's Kent Tech-M liquid that much will raise the mag. 230 ppm in a 20 gal. tank and that to much IMO. No more than 100 ppm in 24 hours.

If it is not bryopsis, but rather ordinary green hair algae, the Tech M method probably is not the way to go.

Bryopsis is a very specific organism. Try googling some images to see what it looks like.
Assuming it is not, then I'd look to treat for phosphate with something like GFO rather than with the Tech M impurity plan.

Bryopsis looks similar to a fern leaf. The theory is it's a side effect of the Tech M and not the Mg itself. Post some pics and you may be able to get a confirmation whether you have bryopsis or regular hair algae. The Tech M won't do anything for normal algae and you would have to address the excess nutrients instead.
If you do have bryopsis, you want to add small, regular doses and test regularly to make sure it doesn't go too high outside normal ranges. |

If you have enough thriving algae, you can test low just because the algae is sucking up all the nutrients. But it is still a good plan to intercept the nutrients, and especially phosphate, before the algae gets it.

+1 for Randy, the algae uses that to grow and need a source for it.
