Found in the crevices of my power head
Hey all. Could someone tell me what kind of worm this shell is from? I assume that's what these are. I have found them before, but usually much smaller--yeah, I know, like these are monster size. These were in the inside corners of a power head. They have one or two flat sides depending on where they were attached. The opening is very sharp--I actually stabbed my finger once with a small one. Sorry the pics are any better, but they are small. Thanks for any help on i.d.

Yeah they are. Spiral tubes that are somewhat conical shaped.

Yep, vermetid snails. They can multiply quite rapidly and can also irritate corals when they send out their sweeper tentacles to trap food.

I have 1,000s of those all over rocks, my castle, inside my filter equip.. they are really tiny and don't get any bigger than that.. I have vermetid snails .. the big ones.. I just didn't know they came in mini size too I just assumed those mini ones were some other filter feeder lol and boy do they hurt if you get poked by one!!!!

Yup, vermetid/vermatid depending on how you want to spell it, but that's what they are. Look around your rocks, youll probably find lots of them. They come in various colors, but are generally conical spirals. Here's what they would look like on rock:
Other than being present, I have not found them to be a problem. My acros and other encrusting coral grow right over them, making for some interesting forms .

Thanks everyone. I really haven't seen them on my rock, but they do get on my PH and in other spots. Cool little shells they produce.
