What's this thing growing on my live rock??

This thing started out pretty small... about 1 inch... now it's grown to about 3 inches... looks kind of like it has mouths... what is this thing?? some type of coral?? No color.. just looks like some kind of gray blob...

don't think it's a tunicate... i'm not really familiar with them but a quick google image search comes up with pictures that look completely different.... also some reading shows tunicates are filter feeders... i never feed my tank and this thing is thriving...

aren't sponges filter feeders as well?? I don't feed any filter feeder type of foods to my tank and it's in an area with no flow...

Yes they are. Did you just discover this or did this come on a some new liverock? I have several sponges growing in the back of may tank and in dark places and I never feed them anything specific either. Have had them for a year + and they just keep on growing.

Agreed, Those openings look like the osculms of a sponge. It might live for a while longer but it will probably end up starving.

Do a search for Clathria(sp?) Its a type of sponge that usually comes as a hitchiker, looks like what you have.
