New skimmer is here...

I had set it up on the DT, but decided on the refugium for it's home.

It's up and running, and after some tinkering there are microbubbles. The whole body of it is white with them.

But there is no foam. At all. The water/bubbles come up to the part that you remove when it fills with skimmate, but they all pop there, at the water surface.

I don't know if that's normal for day one of a new skimmer, or if there should be some foam.

I know there is a break in period for skimmers, so your probably just going through that.
Im going to stick along for this because my Super Reef Octopus 1000 is coming in the mail Monday!

What skimmer did you get?

Normal for brand new skimmer. They have a break in period before they will start producing. It may take a week or two.

One of many faux paus for me. Cheap skimmer off ebay. It is a "Shkerry Aqua Skimmer"

LOL! Which is where my concern comes from. I know. I know. Stupid.

Read over and over "never skimp on skimmers or lights" ...

I tried to look it up to see what it looks like. I know some skimmers like the CSS skimmers microbubbles are just part of life.

My first skimmer took about a week before it started producing foam and my second (which is HOB and 2 weeks old) took 4 days.

Wondering if all the filtering I'm doing in the tank is slowing it down from the foaming stage. I have a HOB filter running on the DT, rinse the media daily. I also have sponges on 2 of 3 powerheads, rinse them as needed, at least every third day. There is also a sponge on the intake of the skimmer.

It still has microbubbles like crazy, and the bubbles at the top did rise a bit for a while last night when I turned it back on after feeding.

The skimmer is Model No. 23PUM003-1802. Here's a google search that shows pics:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Model...w=1333&bih=578

The pics don't show it with microbubbles though. I'll get some pics of mine and post them.

Try having the overflow from the skimmer run into a filter sock. that solved all of my bubble issues.

Not worried about microbubbles going into the refugium. I'm worried about them not making foam so far.

years ago (dare I say decades?) I had a similar skimmer which almost never performed well. You can certainly hang out with it for a while to see if it gets better, but I'd probably start budgeting for an upgrade in the immediate future.

I will be watchin this thread also. Just hooked up my ps75 last night and it has microbubbles in the chamber but no foam. I plan on modding it, I don't know what your skimmer looks like but if it was cheap you may be able to hack it up with some mods and make it perform

Beginning to look at how other skimmers are designed, for future tweeking if needed.

Is it all in the pump? Because a pump upgrade would be easy in the near future.

Ok I will ask why are you running a HOB filter? And it will take up to a week to get good foam production.

I would say from the pics, he is running it that way for lack of room in his sump.

And yeah, you can change the pump completely out, you can mod the stock pump, change the pump and mod the new one. Theres alot you can do. You can mesh mod the stock pump and upgrade the air line to a bigger one, the list goes on.

Also, vinegar cuts the break in time down. I'm getting ready to pull mine off and stick it in a bucket of vinegar and run it for awhile.

do you just run the pump in the vinegar or the whole skimmer?

You can do either, but if the skimmer isn't gunked up the pump is fine. I generally don't run it, just let it soak for a couple hours followed by a scrub. Make sure to remove rubber gaskets and O-rings.
