Coral Hitchhiker ID?
So this interesting looking thing seems to have hitchhiked in on a frag that I got at my club's fragswap a few weeks ago. I dipped them in CoralRX and all that and I never noticed this stuff until about a week ago. Any idea what it is? Does not look good and at this point I have noticed it on a couple of my zoas.

I have a sponge growing all underneath my zoa colony.. but not like that one. are your zoas bothered by it? is it easy to remove? is it slimy?

It seems like they may be bothered by it as that group does not open up anymore. I have some other zoas that are still opening, but I know that zoas can sometimes be picky. I have not tried removing it or touching it.

And I guess while I'm at it I might as well ask about these. The thing next to the inflatable arm balloon man is an apitasia, right? And then any idea about the leafy looking stuff growing around those palys in the middle of the image? They are new as well, did not see them on the frag when I got them.

The first one is a type of photosynthetic sponge. I would remove it as it has the potential to over grown the zoas. The macro algae is Dictyota (Maybe Dictyota Humifusa?) which I would also remove. I don't see a clear picture of aptitasia but if you are talking about the 'thing' next to the Xenia (right next to its base), it does look like an aptitasia.

Thanks for the quick answers. Do you think the sponge is worth trying to keep in the tank somewhere? I keep hearing everyone going ga-ga for sponges.
And yeah, I was talking about next to the Xenia. Is that Xenia bad as in "can overgrow your tank" as well? |

I don't think it's worth the effort to try save the sponge. I would be more worry about getting the zoas away from this particular type. As for Xenia, lots of people like them. They do grow fairy fast and could take up a lot of space in a small tank. It's up to you. If you like it, keep it. If you are really worry, try to isolate the Xenia in a small rock off the main rock work to prevent them from quickly spreading everywhere.
