is sand a requirement for refugiums?
I have a eshopps cs100 sump I am about to start the process of removing the bio-balls little by little. I was wondering if sand was a must for refugiums? because with that sump there's only to slits for water to move from one chamber to the other one on top to high for my licking and one about 3" from the bottom so when I get the bio-balls out maybe I could modify my pipes and put a light and grow cheato since my water level is 10" so i could grow algae on top but no sand underneath. has anyone converted this sump into a refugium?

I'm not familiar with that sump model, but you could do very well without sand- it's not a requirement at all. Macroalgae and live rock rubble would do well, not to mention just macroalgae.

Sand is not required. I don't even recommend it. Too small of an area to get much denitrification from a DSB, and generally hard to clean with a siphon.

No sand in my refugium either, which makes it easy for cleaning/maintenance. I know some ppl who place the sand in a tupperware container for easy removal, if that's something you want to consider.

For those with a bare bottom fuge, what do you put in there? Just LR and macro algae? Anything else that would be beneficial?
