Cracked sump
I just moved my 65g tank about an hour up the highway, got everything set up, and started running the return pump and skimmer over night....
I woke up in the morning to the sound of my return pump slurping air/ water and missing about 2/3 of a sump full of water! I found 2 semi circle cracks, 2 of which seem to be centered on the bottom of one of the dividers. I was only using the compartment labeled "skim" as a miniature sump and there was only enough water to submerge the rubble rock in the center compartment. As you can see the cracks are going through all the compartments of the 20 gal long tank. My question is what could have caused this? Pressure from the move/ wedging the tank into the stand? A small crack from the move made bigger with the pressure from the newly added water? I just created a bubble trap with 3" pipes and wye pipes linked together and hanging on the side. The bottoms of this contraption did sit on the glass, but the cracks don’t seem to match the footprint of the pipe. I just want to be sure that if I get a new tank this won’t happen again! Any thoughts?? |

Those look like a common stress crack, a warped stand or otherwise twisted tank cracks like this. Especially thin glass tanks like 10 gallon. Might consider an acrylic sump for the next one.
