I would go with 36 total LEDs and I would put 24 on the SPS side and 12 on the other side.

I would do 36 as well with 60 degree optics. I would run 12blue XPE, 12 royal blue XPE, and 12 cool white XPG. I've got 82 over my 120g and par is 200+ at the bottom of the 24" depth.
XPE and XPE share the same optics. you can get them online at some websites. I got mine through a group buy website for LED's. Good luck! Oh, and add 12 more if you can...dim them if you must but better to have more and dim than not have enough. |

that combo would seem to blue. im running 18 cool white 18 royal blue 6 blue and with white at 1.3A and blue at 750ma its a phoenix 14k kinda look. no optics unless you want to hang your fixture 15 inches above the water. dont think your gonna burn anything up with 36 leds. will let you know if i see any bleeching,(just set it up friday)
keep the lower light coral on the far sides. |

24 no optics with xp-e and xp-g would be fine.. theres no need for 60 deg optics on a 18" depth tank with the xp series.. 12 for half the tank would be enough..

Not to hijack here, but been thinking of switching from MH to LED's. Other than they require less power and produce less heat that is the extent of my knowledge of led's. So some help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Odviously I would like to build my own set-up if possible. spending a couple grand for a set-up is out of the question. Again don't mean to hijack here..
Thanks

ok im starting out with the 12 led, ive pieced everything together on the rapidled website, but cant decide if i should get the optics or not theyre now offering 80 degree optics, does it really narrow the light that much? the 40breeder has been ditched for a 18x18x8 so 12 should light it no problem just dont know about the optics, as far as dimming i dont really care for it, i just want on/off, its safe to put the leds on a timer right?
