What does RO unit filter?

So I was just wondering, my ro unit tds is 4 before the DI. Is there any way of knowing or guessing what this 4 consists of? Is it mainly minerals or could it be nothing but the bad chemicals or even prescription medications still in the water supply? Or do ro units mainly remove all the bad things from the water and just leave the good stuff? I am curious because before my ro unit I bought distilled water to drink and now I just fill up containers with my ro water and use them to drink. Would it be better to just use the DI water to drink or is the 4ppm mostly harmless things in the water?

a properly working unit should remove darn near everything. It doesn't differentiate between the good or bad stuff. You could spend alot of time, effort and money figuring out exactly what that 4ppm consisted off. TDS is just a generic measurment of "stuff", could be any number of things in the water. Personally, I'd save my ro/di water for the tank, not for drinking. But that's just me, as so many in the hobby would probably agree, the fish eat and drink better than i do. Carefully and meticulously prepared foods and ro/di for the fish, cheap bologna/cheese and ramen for me.

This link will provide anything you want to know about RO/DI, what it removes, and how it removes it:
