Marine Ich
55g reef tank. I got a sweet lips 4 days ago, great healthy fish, good personality. Started to see a couple of small white spots on him, assuming its marine ich. I looked up cures for marine ich, people have recommended Hyposalinty/Osmotic Shock therapy. Do i have to remove my corals, invertebrates and fish before performing the process?

This should help. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/blog.php?b=289 You will need to move the fish to a hospital tank and treat them there.

You will have to remove the fish into QT and treat them with hypo or copper there.
And your DT will need to stay fishless for 6-8 weeks so the parasite will cycle out and die.

First,
Mix the food with some garlic liquid for a few days to see it helps. After a few day if you see no improvement or it get worse. isolate the fish in a 10g tank with hospitality (or treat the fish with coppery ) for 4-6 weeks Do not dose any copper or any medication into your main tank, they are killer to your corals. |

Wait a min.....wouldn't hospitality mean a 75Gal tank instead of a 10Gal....I mean we're talking about a Four Seasons vs. a HoJo with dirty sheets here

Let's also not forget the fact that it is a carnivore....which most times isn't very conducive to keeping a clean up crew or small fish population one typically maintains in a small reef.

Any LFS that would stock a juvenile sweetlips must be considered irresponsible. I would be very skeptical of any fish from that LFS. Definitely check out any possible fish here first. We are not selling fish.

If it's ich, it's very likely in your tank already. The garlic helps for sure. But
I had luck using a fine pleated filter, the one I have used was a marineland HOT or the magnum. You need at least two pleated filter inserts. You run the filter for several months, to be safe. Twice per week remove the pleated filter and put in the spare. Clean the filter in bleach and very hot water, let sit several hours, rinse well, and let dry completely in the sun. Make sure the chlorine is completely gone before you reuse the pleated filter. This traps the ich in the free swimming stage and eventually eliminates them. |

+1 on Chris's comments No filter, UV, or garlic magic will cure ich.
+1 on Steve's comments on sweetlips, this fish doesn't belong any any home tank. (very few, maybe). the LFS owner should be told this and avoided. To the OP: I'd suggest reading a lot before you buy any more fish. learn about fish and diseases. Google your sweetlips and see what he grows into. I sense a disaster coming. ALL your fish need to be treated for ich, the link in post #9 will tell you why. I won't even go into my QT rant yet.

Perhaps you should take a sabbatical on QT rants...I did, and I was a much happier person
