haha, dude the jawfish is about one the hardest small fish to keep. My friend went through 2 of them before he was successful, and he researched and found that the success rate of keeping a jawfish are about 10%.

they are veryyyyy easily prone to infections, and get very stressed when they are first introducing int the aquarium. They constantly open their mouth when stressed, opening the gate for fungal and bacterial infections.

i have never kept one, but my friend had 2, and he was only successful with the third one. I dont think it is a beginner fish at all.

We have a Starry Blenny in one of our tanks, and he is loads of fun. When I get by the tank he perchs in the midst of his green star polys. He is also the fish that I have been bitten by the most, scared me half to death one day when I saw him swimming with intent towards my arm.

Our Kole tang is not at all personable unlike what others have described. Ours is actually rather aloof about us, just swims around the tank eating algae off the glass and the live rock.

Our Blonde Naso tang is very personable and will eat out of our hands.
In the same tank as our naso tank, the long nose hawfish is quite personable and fun.

As far as hawkfish go, we have a swallowtail hawkfish that after he settled in is very personable. When we come in the room he jumps out of his hidey hole as swims around looking at us. I was at a LFS who had two hawkfish in the same display. Those little buggers hoped on a rock next to each other and watched us walk back and forth....

I would suggest a Helmet Cowfish (Tetrasomus gibbosus). We have one that is so cute! He pokes an eyeball above the water when knows it is dinner time. He is not only fun to watch but follows us around his tank.

Can anyone say we have too many tanks?!?

Yes the blue spot is not a begginer fish, pearly jawfish are just as nice and comical for a fraction of the price of the blue spot.

I have to agree with all the others that said to get a blenny. Of all the fish I have ever had blenny's have the most personality. One thing I noticed that is different with them is that they move their head around like if they have a neck. Mine will hide behind a rock and peak his head up, look in both directions and then dart back down. When I get close and look in the tank he will come right up to the glass and watch me.

He also found an empty turbo snail shell in the sand. He turned it over and now uses it as his bed when the lights go out.

Blennies and clown gobies are adorable, I agree, for personality though, you can't beat a cow fish or dog faced puffer, but they are quite a commitment.

Wow, you must really think so to waste a post on this thread, you have been a member since 2004 & only 13 posts? That's barley more than 1 a year, LOL, maybe I should get a cow fish, are they good reef citizens?

My tailspot blenny was by far my favorite fish I've ever had. He took up residence in an old snail shell that had xenia on it and when any fish got close he'd pop out and look over the whole tank as if to keep tabs on everyone. The best part is that they have this yellow marking on their face that looks like a frown. It's like having the crabby old guy telling the dang kids to stay off his lawn. He was always checking me out when I fed. He developed an impaction or stomach parasite and would never let me catch him to try and treat him. Def the fish I miss the most.

IMO, I think all fish have their own personality.
